The
introduction of the Environment Act 1995 and Part IIA of the Environmental
Protection Act 1990 has resulted in a more risk-based assessment of
'harm' based upon the 'suitable for use' principle.
Following the statistical based qualitative assessment of risk
undertaken in accordance with the
CLR 7 guidance, Knight
Environmental Limited can
offer a wide range of quantitative risk assessment packages. Our approach
to the design of effective remedial solutions is to base them, wherever
possible, upon the results of a suitable quantitative risk assessment
(QRA).
At Knight Environmental Limited these are conducted
in accordance with the requirements of Part IIA and include QRAs for:
'controlled waters' and
human
health
Our 'controlled waters' quantitative risk assessments are based
upon site-specific data where available and identify the likeliest
sensitive receptor be it an actual or hypothetical groundwater abstraction
well or a vulnerable surface water resource. We assess potential pathways
and model likely impacts on the identified receptors. This results
in an identification of the likely acceptable remediation options
for each specific site.
Equally important is the potential impact of contamination upon the
health of end-users or neighbouring site users. Thus we undertake human health risk assessments which determine and quantify
the potential risk to human health and enable us to develop site-specific
target levels for remediation.
Knight Environmental Limited are also in the process of developing
generic soil screening values for a broad comparative approach to
risk assessments.
