Project: School Road, Great Totham
Client: Major Developer
Contract Value: £127,400
Knight Environmental Limited were contracted to provide environmental services for the development of a former engineering works involved in truck assembly, with an associated depot at School Road, Great Totham. The technical support included site investigation, risk assessment, remedial design, demolition, remediation and continual liaison with the regulatory authorities.
The site was found to have “hotspots” of contamination from elevated levels of metals and hydrocarbons, with asbestos prevalent within the surface soils. The underlying groundwater also showed elevated levels of hydrocarbons in two of the three sampling locations at the site.
The following key operations formed the basis of the site works required to decontaminate the site:-
Removal of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos and demolition of buildings.
Removal of asbestos debris within the surface and subsurface soils.
Removal of localised areas of impaction by excavation and disposal of contaminated soil to prescribed depths.
Backfilling with chemically acceptable inert soils to prescribed ground levels.
The presence of asbestos debris within the surface soils was confirmed to be widespread across the site. Following the site demolition, additional asbestos debris was discovered beneath the footprints of the demolished buildings and the underside of the floor slabs.
Under the supervision of an environmental engineer the identified localised areas of impaction were excavated to the prescribed depths.
Approximately 15 square metres of asbestos containing sheeting was removed and disposed of to a licensed waste management facility. An additional 566 tonnes of contaminated soils were removed from site under a duty-of-care system to a suitably licensed landfill site.
