Project: Eurocentre, Faversham
Client: Major House Builder
Value: £9,500
Historically, the site was used for fruit packing and storage, with a later conversion to wine storage.
The site covering approximately 7 hectares comprised a relatively flat lying area located at Whitstable Road, Faversham in Kent.
Knight Environmental Limited was commissioned to undertake a Hazardous Material Assessment, which comprised three individual assessments:-
1. General Hazardous Materials
A walkover of the site was undertaken to determine types and quantities of hazardous materials that would be classified as Special Waste under the Special Waste Regulations. During the survey an inventory was prepared listing all tanks, drums, containers, and bags etc that contained hazardous substances. Manhole covers were lifted to identify any underground tanks or soak away structures and to take a water sample from the drains. Where material was not labelled or easily identified a sample was taken and submitted to an UKAS accredited laboratory for chemical testing.
2. Asbestos Survey
The aim of the survey was to determine, as far as is reasonably practicable, the full extent of asbestos containing materials present within each building. This involved undertaking a destructive pre-demolition survey (Type 3) as detailed in HSE Guidance Note MDHS 100 “Surveying, Sampling and Assessment of Asbestos Containing Materials in Premises for Management Plans”.
3. Refrigerant Survey
The refrigerant survey covered all units across the site. The refrigerant survey involved the assessment of all air conditioning / refrigeration units to identify and quantify the nature of the refrigerant contained in the units.
